A Reflective Chinese
Singer
14 October
2006
Though
newly entered China’s music scene, she
has conquered the nation’s musical
world. With her enigmatic voice of a
hypnotic quality, and her elegant body
that moves as though a statue of goddess
comes to life after being touched by a
mysterious breath, she brings the
unsullied essence from high mountains and
a tune that is authentically ancient and
Chinese to the midst of bursting cities
which are currently ruled by raw desires.
And she purifies them.

Sa Dingding
in performance
While most
contemporary young singers are on the
stage wailing about their unrequited
love, weeping over their broken hearts
and lamenting on their trivial loss, she
opens up her soul, holding back nothing,
lets her blessings flow without
condition. Above all, she sends her
audience into a meditative realm where
each little moment echoes the cosmic
rhythm, and into a dreamland where they’ll
be waken up by their own inner wisdom.
And this
is Sa Dingding (萨顶顶) who has captured
the hearts of millions at home and abroad
with her reflective melody The Birth
of Ten Thousand Things (Wanwusheng《万物生》):
Winter used to be
freezing
Summer always raining
Autumn brought your voice
From a distance
That was warm and gracious
You said in the back of our house
There was white snow
And the banners
That coloured with yellow
Flustering in the valley
Where wind gusts blow
……………
从前冬天冷呀夏天雨呀水呀
秋天远处传来你声音暖呀暖呀
你说那时屋后面有白茫茫茫雪呀
山谷里有金黄旗子在大风里飘呀
……………
It is the
theme song of a ethinic Tibetan-language
film Prince of Himalaya (《喜马拉雅王子》) that is due for
release on Monday in Shanghai, in which
the winner of China’s first Prince
Charming contest Pubajia (普巴甲) plays the leading role –
a tragic hero who is the Chinese version
of Prince Helmet.

Sa
Dingding’s first album Wanwusheng
is said will be released both in China
and overseas by the end of November, so
sooner we’ll be able to share her
immense reflective calm in her melodious
world of primary simplicity of the true
east.
