A Legendary First Lady of China

Former First Lady Wang Guangmei (王光美), one of the legendary women in China, passed away on Black Friday, October 13, in Beijing at the age of 85, reported Xingtao Daily.

Ever since married Liu Shaoqi, former president of China, she had been thrown into a whirlwind of the top level politics, and experienced glorious rise and free-fall.

During her time as China’s first lady, with her charm, elegance and dignity, she was deeply respected and widely admired at home and aboard. Her graceful presentation when visiting overseas with pearl necklace, high heel shoes and body hug qibao earned her international acclaim, but later in the Cultural Revolution that became her biggest crime and for this she was repeatedly humiliated in public. She was subsequently imprisoned for twelve years.

Ten thousands Red Guards denounced her decadent lifestyle of wearing peal necklace and high-heel shoes

It is said that Jing Qing, Madam Mao, had a hand in Wang’s torment. The backgrounds and personalities of two first ladies were world apart: One from a scholarly family, well-educated, compassionate, refined and easy going; the another from the bottom of the society, bitter, jealous and resentful, with a burning desire to be heard and seen by the world.

In her later years, Wang Guangmei spent most her time on charity work Sunny Program which is designed to help village children to finish their school.

A lady of grace, she will sure be keenly missed by millions.
