July 10) Rains
of Horror
The resent few
days, Nanjing
in Jiangsu Province and Hefei in
neighbouring Anhui Province experienced
horrors from the sky – the rains of
insects.

Rain of Insects
The insects are
very tiny, about the size of a half grain
of rice, but they have wings and love to
fly towards light - street lamps are
covered with these little creatures. What
is most horrible is that once they land
on your head they’ll squeeze into your
hair, your eyes and your ears. Exerts say
they are sort of rice lice, and predict
their presence will have serious effect
on the quality of the rice produced in
the area.

Four
Years for a Blind Law Expert
Chen Guangcheng is a blind
man. Out of his strong urge to help poor
peasants who are often bullied by local
officials, he self-taught in law and
became quite the expert in the field.
Since then he investigated into some
cases involving allegations of brutal
practice in the part of the local
governments in relation to implementing
the One Child Policy, and helped the
victims to launch class action lawsuit as
well as personally participated in street
protests. In March this year he was
charged by the local police for damaging
public property and disrupting transport
and public services, and last Sunday he
was sentenced by the district court of
Linyiyinan County in Shandong Province to
four-year imprisonment.
Recently there are quite a
lot of talks about China’s legal
system, with the debate especially hot on
the Internet forums and blogs.
