The Girl on Bus

About one month ago, an article appeared in a BBS forum, praising the courtesy and beauty of a young bus conductor the author countered on the bus Rout 4 in Yangzhou city on the north shore of the Yangtze River. He called her “公交MM”(公交 for bus and MM for meimei, meaning younger sister) and provided photos he secretly took to prove his point.

Since then, this MM’s fame has skyrocked. If you do a Google search on the phrase "公交MM", you’ll get three to four million related items, including a webside that is solely devoted to her. And her life has been changed. When working, she is constantly pestered by her male fans for her attention and, sometimes, her contact details. When walking down the streets, she would be asked for a signature. While at home, she keeps receiving phone calls from total strangers.

It is true some people would just do anything to be a celebrity. Yet being forced into becoming a public figure is not Bus MM’s cup of tea. "I feel I’m living through a nightmare," said Bus MM to a Chinese journalist with the Xiandai Kuaibao. She hopes one day she can wake up from the dream of horror and resume her normal life as a humble nobody.

Show My Face or Show My Bum? That Is the Question

She insists she’s a writer, but many conservative Chinese view her as nothing else but a slut. Slut or not, she does write, on her blog. And she looks reasonably pretty, that qualifies her to be a Beautiful Writer (美女作家).

In today’s China, the number of blogs is in the millions, good writing alone won’t make one blog stand out; even a good writing plus a pretty face won’t get you very far. In order to be noted in the virtual world, you have to do something really controversial and outrageous to cause public uproar. After all, that is what a good number of off-line Beautiful Writers have done: put author’s near-naked photo on the cover of her book. And that is what this online Beautiful Writer does now: showing her bum in her blog.

And they go there everyday and in group tours.

This is certainly a praiseworthy option, from the perspectives of the parents and teachers. But this view is not keenly shared by some book store staffs. The kids often handle the books in a rough manner – well, otherwise they won’t be kids – as a result each day there are certain number of books get damaged.
