An Academic Obsession

A Chinese high school girl in Xi’an is an excellent student at school, and praised highly by her teachers and her parents for scoring perfect marks in her exam results. But lately her mother reckons that this is actually a problem. The girl seems having developed an obsession with exam. She spends all day studying until small hours, and at the time when she’s not doing her homework, she would sign and say to her mom, "Without exams, my life would be pointless."

According to a new study, nearly sixty percent of teachers reckon that the current arrangement of junior high largely focuses on the preparations for the entry exam to senior high. The research also found that junior high students have to spend over 10 hours a day at school, plus more than two hours of extra homework at home. About 40 percent of students say they usually study for seven days a week.

One of the direct results of this is the negative emotional response towards school and study in general. More than one in three student experiences high anxiety and stress when approaching the school.
