Chinese
New Year is the most
important festival in China,
which consists of a series
of lengthy period of celebrations.
It
starts on the first day of the first
month, i.e. the day of the second new
moon after the day on which the winter solstice occurs, and
ends with the Lantern Festival on the
first full moon night of the year.
However, the starting
day of the Fire Dog Year is actually
February 4th, 2006, for it is the
first day of the first lunar month,
which is called "Start of
Spring", as by then the sun
enters the 315th degree on the
tropical zodiac. In the China time
zone, this year the sun will enter
such a position at 4 Feb, 07:27am.
The Fire Dog Year 2006
is also year 4703 in Chinese
calender. The Yellow King, who is
considered to be the common ancestor
of all ethnic Han Chinese,
ascended the throne in 2697 B.C. and
formally established the Chinese
nation. Since the Chinese calendar
uses the cycle of 60 Stem-Branch
counting systems and the Fire Dog is
the 23rd in the circle, (60x78) + 23
= 4703, therefore this year is the
4703rd Chinese Year.
Chinese New Year is
the time when the largest migration
takes place as Chinese all over the
world return home to have reunion
dinner with their family on the eve,
waiting to greet the new year and
grow one year older together at the
midnight. It is called shousui.
Chinese used to view
the Nian as a predator who could
infiltrate houses silently, but it
can be scared away with spectacular
fireworks and firecrackers.

Year
of Dog 2006 is after Monkey 2004 and
Rooster 2005 in the circle formed by
the twelve zodiac symbols, namely rat
(yang water), ox (yin earth),

fire), goat (yin earth),
monkey (yang metal), rooster
