A Naturally Formed Money God Unearthed

23 June 2008

Not many people will keep an ugly toad as a pet, but many Chinese like to place an ornamental article made in the image of a toad on his or her desk or cabinet as a symbol of prosperity, as advised by feng shui masters. In some Asian shops, a toad figure would be placed near cash registers.

Toad the Money God is not a normal toad that has four legs and croaks. The money-wise toad only has three legs, but as if to make up for its disability, it has acquired a supernatual ability of spilling coins from its mouth. And it prefers to keep a dignified silence.

The quiet triple Legged mythical Toad is said to only appear on full moon night near properties that are about to receive a news of a good monetary gain. When stationed on desk or cabinet as symble of wealth, it usually sits on a bed of coins or a gold ingot, with an extra coin in its mouth to promote its financial speciality servces.

In China's Guanzhou (Canton) there is White Cloud District (白云区), in the district there is a Cap Tip Forest Park (帽峰森林公园), in the park there is an ancient Bddhist temple, and the temple is forever crowded with incense bearers that brings a healthy income to the monastery.

Locals would not ask why the monastery is blessed with wealth, because they know why: there is a naturally formed stone Toad hidden deep in the back of the property.

No one ever saw the stone toad though, until in June 2008 when a construction company hired by the park management to clear up the hilltop behind the temple to build a theme square. After a large quantity of yellow earth had been removed from the surface, a giant stone that uncannily resembles the Wealth Toad on coin bed was revealed.

Now the inital theme of the square becomes irrelevant, because a new theme has suggested itself: Square of Money God.
