One Person Monastery 10 June 2008
Master Miaofang at Pumen Monastery In Beijing's newly developed finacial centre Chaoyang district (朝阳区), there is a humble monastery with a plate on its wall since 1984 signifying its noble status as a protected heritage site. Under the huge pressue from many quarters to redevelope the site for profitable commucial use, this tiny and rundown Buddhist monastery holds the ground firmly and refuses to cease its existence. The strength that supports the monastery's quiet yet persistant presence comes from a single person, a nun in her advanced age of seventies. While this genuine follower of the Buddha fights an one-person's courageous battle for the survival of this ancient monastery, she graciously lives a simple life consisted of doing extensive meditation and eating vegetables she scavenged from the bins in food market.
