中国擎天柱
A Human Column

25 June 2008

In the world community, physical strength, characterized with being massive in size and able to exert powerful force on objects using muscles, has never been considered Chinese men's strong point; within the Chinese community, men in Sichuan are never renowned for their outstanding masculine vigor.

But if you think that means Sichuan men are less physically impressive, you may need to think again, at least in one incident.

In Chongqing metropolitan (重庆), situated in Sichuan region, there is a physically unimpressive man surnamed Peng. Mr Peng runs an unimpressive wholesale business for alcohol and soft drinks with his wife on Shangxin Street (上新街) in Nanan District (南岸), and the couple stored about one ton of liquid products in their unimpressive attic.

On Sunday morning, 22 June, when Peng was on the ground floor doing some unimpressive warehouse work, an impressively loud snape sound came from the space over his head. Without thinking what might be happening, he intuitively raised his arms to hold up the ceiling. Only after that, he realised he tranformed himself into a column that stopped attic floor, along with a ton of liquid bottles, from crashing onto ground.

Just like this, the impressive human column supported the attic until his wife and neighbours and later firefighters arrived to replace him with wooden columns and to get the heavey liquid load removed from the attic. Not a single bottle of drink was damaged in the incident.

Mr Peng wasn't always so impressive, but since he started precticing traditional Chinese kung fu Iron Palm about 20 years ago, his palms become so rough and tough like two pieces of raw iron and his arms so strong as if made of bronze.

Just wonder how many pairs of human columns China has.

铁砂掌
Iron Palm

A young Shaolin disciple practices Iron Palm

Iron Palm is a Hard Kungfu, and one of the most commonly practiced martial arts in Shaolin Monastery.

During the training session, a practitioner will need to repeatedly thrust his hands into a jar filled with iron sand until one day he can easily shove his palms into the mess of sand as if into a pen of water.

A good master's Iron Palm can cut a pile of bricks into pieces with a single strike.
