Zongzi for Dragon Boat Festival

8 June 2008

For over 2,000 years, the fifth day in lunar fifth month has been celebrated as China's unique Dragon Boat Festival, yet it is the first time since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, it is officially a public holiday.

Like all other festivities in China, this special occasion can not be observed without featured food, therefore today, billions of tiny pyramids wraped in bamboo leaves and tied up tight with straws rose from Chinese breakfast and/or lunch and/or dinner tables, and were untied and unwrapped until a white edible object is revealed.

This smooth looking object called 粽子  (zongzi) is constructed with sticky rice and decorated with red beans or red dates, and coated with white sugar when served.

Are they delicious? You bet! After 2,000 years only few people still enthusiastically row dragon boats on this very day, and even fewer can ever tell why they celebrate this festival, but almost everyone takes a bite on zongzi.
