Beijing Twins Culture Festival 11 Octber 2007
Unlike the Tibetans, the Uighurs and the all other minority ethnic Chinese who can have as many children as they wish, the Han people who consist of 95 percent of total population in China are under strict one child policy. Officially published figures show, that between year 2000 and 2005, of all babies born in China, only 56 percent had Han parents. As the result, the proportion of the Han among Chinese and the world population keep falling sharply. Some extreme opponents to this biased policy even call it Han People genocide. Currently for a Han couple who yearn to give their beloved offspring a brother or sister will have to meet a rigorous criteria to prove they are severely disadvantaged by not having a second child, which vast majority of people have no hope to meet. But some Han Chinese are very smart who know how to get round the hurdle on their way to establish a reasonable sized family: when they give birth to one baby, they get another baby for free (quote). What’s the secret to achieving that? Simple, give birth to twins. The twins make their smart parents so proud that they presented their bargain of life for a public show at the Beijing Twin Culture Festival (北京双胞胎文化节), the forth of this kind. See, having twins even becomes a culture! In the morning of October 2, nearly 700 twins entered Red Scarf Park through the red carpet Twin Star Boulevard, which only twins were allowed to tread upon. Twins are stars of culture! Get the idea? According to the figure released by the festival organiser, this year the twins who attended the occasion had a 16 percent increase comparing to that of the last year. If anyone thinks Chinese birth culture psyche can be so easily beaten, he’s mistaken. Pre: There Is No Place
