Chinese Wedding of Titanic Proportion

6 May 2007

On May 3, 100 pairs of Chinese brides and grooms crowded the foreshore square Sea of Stars (星海湾广场) in China's northeast city Dalian (大连市) to tie the knots.

Chinese Rose: I'm floating! Have we reached the heart of the ocean yet?
Chinese Jack: Not yet. But so what, we've alreayd at the tip of the ship.

After the land ceremony, the excited newlyweds boarded a ship to infringe James Cemaron's copyright by posing themselves as Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater.

The mass production of husbands and wives in such a titanic scale in the heart of the ocean (oops, not quite far enough) has already made history by creating a new Geniis Record.

Despite this Pig's Year is considered a Blind Year (盲年) for the Start of Spring day falling before the Chinese New Year's Day and thus less auspicious for starting a new family, in this so-called Golden Week (黄金周), the marriage registration offices were so busy and the business of the big restaurants catering for wedding banquets were booming. During this period in Shanghai there were about 1,500 new couples formed each day, according to local media. Of course, it's a bit too late for them to manufacture a cute piglet, they'll have a Rat baby instead, which is also considered by many Chinese as a lucky zodiac. Rats are smart and witty, and like Piggies, they don't have to work hard to survive - what a life!
