Chairman Mao Returns

"同志们好!"

27 March 2007

"同志们逛街辛苦!"
首长更辛苦!

Comrade Mao Zedong visited a shopping street in Sichuan

If someone looks like Mao Zedong, walks like Mao Zedong, talks like Mao Zedong, such as the one shown in the picture, must he be Mao Zedong?

Not necessarily. First of all, Mao has passed away and rested in a crystal coffin for thirty years, to this millions of people can provide witness testimony; and secondly, the one in the photo is not a man, but a woman, this her makeup artist can prove.

In fact, Chen Yan lacks not only fundamental manhood, but essential stature, to pass herself off as China’s mighty chairman. Being just 1.6m tall, this 51-year old mother needs to wear a pair of shoes with a 30cm thick heel to reach the impressive height of the late giant.

Though it sounds like a bad joke to have a relatively short woman to play an extraordinarily lofty man, especially when the man in question is the most well-known figure in contemporary Chinese history, some of China’s leading TV stations, including the state-sponsored Chinese Central TV and a renowned pioneering Hunan television station, are reported to be dead serious in considering to give her a try, since the physical similarities between the two are so striking.

If she does take the role, then that would be very interesting, very. But when that happens, should we call her Chairman Mao or Madam Mao? Gotta ask – no offence intended.
