Ancient Chinese Street

30 April 2007

Chongqing has a Foreigners Street (洋人街), but at the southeast section of the foreigner’s world there is a corner that is more Chinese, at least in appearance, than most non-foreigner areas in the metropolitan.

It is a street built based on the ancient painting, Riverside Scene at Qingming Festival (《清明上河图》) by Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) artist Zhang Zeduan (张择端).

During this May Day holiday, along the Song street, Han clothing will be available for visitors to don, copper coins will be used as the currency and old styled teahouses, taverns and crafts stores will open for business.

The Riverside Scene is a 5 metre long painting that portrays a panoramic street scene of the 11th century’s Chinese capital Bianliang (汴梁), located in today’s Kaifeng, Henan.
